PHOTOPHOSPHORYLATION

Learning Objectives for this Section

Photophosphorylation (def) uses the radiant energy of the sun to drive the synthesis of ATP. This is a process seen only in cells capable of photosynthesis. Light energy activates chlorophyll causing it to transfer an electron to an electron transport chain and, in the process, produce ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate. Photophosphorylation will be discussed in greater detail under photosynthesis.
