In the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) system of transport, a high affinity binding protein located in the periplasm between the cytoplasmic membrane and the cell wall picks up the substance to be transported and carries it to the membrane-spanning transporter. The actual transport across the membrane is powered by the energy provided by the breakdown of ATP by an ATP-hydrolyzing protein.
