Active Transport of Substances Across a Membrane:
The ATP-Binding Cassette Transport System

In the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) system of transport, a high affinity binding protein located in the periplasm between the cytoplasmic membrane and the cell wall picks up the substance to be transported and carries it to the membrane spanning transporter. The actual transport across the membrane is powered by the energy provided by the breakdown of ATP by an ATP-hydrolyzing protein.
