Fig. 5D1: If the solute concentration is higher outside the cell (the environment surrounding the cell), the environment is hypertonic to the cell. (More solute, therefore
less free water.)
If the environment surrounding the cell is hypertonic (more solute) then the cytoplasm of the cell must be hypotonic to the environment. (Less solute, therefore more free water.) Water would flow out of the cell.

more free water.)
