Antiporters are transport proteins that simultaneously transport two substances across the membrane in opposite directions; one against the concentration gradient and one with the concentration gradient. Antiporters typically use proton motive force to transport a substrate across the membrane. The movement of protons across the membrane (proton motive force) provides the energy for transporting the substrate across the membrane against its concentration gradient..
