The binding of peptidoglycan
fragments and teichoic acids to their toll-like receptors (TLRs) and IL-8
to IL-8 receptors on the surface of neutrophils stimulates them to release
proteases and toxic oxygen radicals for extracellular killing. These
toxic agents not only kill bacteria in the vicinity but also kill surrounding
host cells and tissues.
