Fig. 6E2: Active Transport: Symporter

Symporters are transport proteins that simultaneously transport two substances across the membrane in the same direction; one against the concentration gradient and one with the concentration gradient. Symporters often use proton motive force to transport a substrate across the membrane. The movement of protons across the membrane (proton motive force) provides the energy for transporting the substrate.
