Fig. 2: The 5-Carbon Sugar Ribose

During nucleotide production, the nitrogenous base will attach to the 1' carbon and the phosphate group will attach to the 5' carbon. The first 4 carbons shown form the actual ring of the sugar. The 5' carbon comes off of the ring.
