After completing this section you should be able to perform the following objectives.

1. Define the following:

a. genotype
b. phenotype
c. allele
d. mutation
e. spontaneous mutation
f. induced mutation

2. Describe 2 different mechanisms of spontaneous mutation and, in terms of protein synthesis, describe the 4 possible results that may occur as a result of these mutations.

3. Briefly describe 3 ways chemical mutagens work.

4. Compare ultraviolet radiation and gamma radiation in terms of how they induce mutation.
