RNA is synthesized by complementary base pairing of free ribonucleotides with the deoxyribonucleotides of a gene. The ribonucleotides are then covalently bonded together by phosphodiester bonds, the energy being supplied by the cleavage of two phosphate groups from the ribonucleotide triphosphate.The enzyme responsible for transcription is RNA polymerase (not shown here)
